Messages from Mrs Newlands Deputy Principal – Yrs 3-6
What a wonderful place MDSS is to connect, grow, and learn. It has been a busy few weeks for grade 3,4,5,6 students. Some highlights were the wonderful costumes and decorated doors for Book Week, the Year 4 camp and the Year 6 Transition Day.
A reminder that all students need to have board brim hat. The school will be enforcing this rule to ensure that all students are safe from the damage of skin exposure. These can be purchased from School Locker or from the tuckshop.
If you haven’t sent in your Premier’s Reading Challenge recording sheet, please do this by Friday 12th to be in the running for a prize.
I hope all the fathers had a great day on Sunday. I know that student’s loved participating in the Father’s Day activities and making gifts.

Yr 3
I am so proud of the student’s reading, writing and speaking improvements in Yr 3. They have been sharing with Leadership their persuasive writing and speaking tasks and they have learned so much!
Planetarium Excursion is on this Friday. Please ensure students at school by 8:15am at the latest. Normal lunch, water bottle and hats are needed. I am sure all students will enjoy this celestial excursion.

Year 4
Camp was such a highlight for the year 4s last week. I was so very proud of many students who put themselves outside of their comfort zone to try new activities, work in teams and be away from home. Although the water was freezing, they loved the pool and the freedom to play with each other in free time. Thank you to the families for helping students label items and pack as this year we had a very small amount of lost property.
There has been so much learning in the past few weeks in Yr 4. From solving distance challenges in math, studying forces in science (luckily all the eggs survived the ‘egg drop’!), learning how to take care of our earth and to persuade people to be sustainable. I am looking forward to hearing their persuasive presentations about this important topic. Students have also been learning all about recycling and with support from the Moreton Bay Regional Council, we will be improving the way we manage waste at the school.

Yr 5
The Year 5 students are getting ready to start their Student Leadership applications. Going home this week will be the Student Leadership Passport. Students who complete their passports will be eligible for a Student Leadership position. Not all students will have to speak on parade, as we know that some positions, such as Year Level Leader, don’t require this skill. Please encourage your child to have a go at a leadership position as students develop great skills through this journey.
Thank you to the dads and Carers who came to the Father’s Day oval play. I hope enjoyed your time with your child, playing like they do at school.

Yr 6
The Graduation Dinner Dance is the talk of the town! Preparations are well underway and a very big thanks the Crystal Palmer, Shelley Till and Karen Nicholson for the time, effort, and money they have put into making the evening, what will be, a stellar night.
Please ensure that you have enrolled your child into a high school. If you haven’t, now is the time as schools will be asking for transfer documents.
I have loved reading student’s Advertisements for a holiday or adventure. They have rich language, and their digital skills are outstanding. These are students who are well and truly equipped for the 21st Century.
It was great to see that our oldest students still love dressing up. Thank you to parents for supporting Book Week and keeping our kids loving book characters!

Messages from Ms Melissa Jones (A/Deputy Principal)– Yrs Prep-2
Prep – 2 Newsletter
It has been a very busy fortnight or our Prep – 2 students here at Moreton Downs with the Book Parade, Year 1 StarLab incursion, Year 2 Dance workshop and the inclusion of our new Guinea Pigs in Prep.
Prep
Our prep students have been hard at work on their English assessment completing a retell of a story. I’ve loved visiting classrooms seeing the growing confidence of our students to use their speaker voice.
However, the highlight in Prep now is of course our newest friends Peanut and Biscuit. Our Prep Guinea Pigs have become part of the family here at Moreton Downs. They can be quite shy but are starting to become more comfortable with their new environment. It has been wonderful seeing the learning opportunities coming from having our Prep Pets!
Year 1
Year 1 have been busy with their procedure writing and have enjoyed being able to express their opinion in their writing. Some of the procedures included how to make a hot dog and how to make fairy bread, which of course were a hit with the Year 1 students.
Star Lab was a fantastic opportunity for the Year 1 students to engage in learning linked to astronomy and learning about what is out there is space. They all enjoyed being able to gaze at the stars and connect with this immersive experience.
Year 2
Our Year 2 cohort had the opportunity to engage in a Dance workshop hosted by Decpetion Bay State High school. Some of the senior dance students came across to our hall as part of their senior assessment. Their task was to teach a workshop to our students. Our Year 2 classes and their teachers enjoyed being a part of this fun experience!
